JC-Magnetics: The Ultimate Magnet FAQ
Everything you need to know about Neodymium magnets, shipping, and technical specs.
1. General & Technical Questions
Q: What are neodymium magnets, and why are they so powerful?
A: Also known as NdFeB or rare-earth magnets, these are the strongest permanent magnets available. They are made from neodymium, iron, and boron, a combination that creates an extremely high magnetic energy density.
Q: What is the difference between N35, N52, and N55 grades?
A: The N-rating refers to the magnetic strength. N35 is affordable and standard; N52 is the industrial powerhouse; and N55 is the strongest commercially available grade, offering ~5% more energy than N52 for highly specialized applications.
Q: Why do neodymium magnets break so easily?
A: Despite their strength, they are physically similar to ceramic. They are brittle and prone to chipping or shattering if they collide forcefully or are dropped.
Q: What is the difference between Axial and Diametric magnetization?
A: Axial magnets have poles on the flat surfaces (top and bottom). Diametric magnets have poles on the sides (across the diameter). You need Diametric magnets for specific sensors, magnetic couplings, or motor designs.
2. Coatings & Durability
Q: What coatings are available and which should I choose?
A: Since neodymium is prone to corrosion, we offer several finishes:
- Nickel (Ni-Cu-Ni): The standard, shiny, durable finish.
- Epoxy (Black): Best for moisture and humid environments; offers superior corrosion resistance.
- Gold: Ideal for aesthetics, jewelry, or skin-contact applications.
Q: Are epoxy-coated magnets less likely to crack?
A: Yes! The epoxy layer adds a slight "cushion" and better bonding than metal plating, making them slightly more resistant to chipping compared to nickel-coated magnets.
3. Shipping, Orders & Support
Q: How long does shipping take?
A: Standard domestic shipping typically takes 3-7 business days.
Q: What is your order processing cutoff time?
A: We strive for fast fulfillment! All orders placed after 2:00 PM Eastern Time will be shipped the following business day.
Q: Why haven’t I received my password reset email?
A: Please check your Spam/Junk folder. If it’s there, mark it as "Not Spam." If you still don't see it, contact our support team for a manual reset.
Q: What happens if my package is stolen after delivery?
A: Once a carrier (USPS/UPS/FedEx) marks a package as "Delivered," the risk of loss passes to the customer. We recommend providing a secure delivery location.
4. Safety & Handling
Q: How do I safely separate strong neodymium magnets?
A: Never pull them directly apart. The best method is to slide the top magnet horizontally off the stack. Using a plastic spacer can also help keep them apart safely.
Q: Can neodymium magnets lose their magnetism?
A: Under normal conditions, they last for decades. However, exposure to temperatures above 80°C (176°F) or strong opposing magnetic fields can permanently weaken them.
Q: Are they safe around electronics and medical devices?
A: Use Caution. Strong magnetic fields can damage hard drives and credit cards. Crucially, keep them at least 20cm (8 inches) away from pacemakers or other medical implants.
5. Popular Applications
Q: What are neodymium magnets used for?
A: Our customers use them for a vast range of projects, including:
- DIY & Engineering: Tools, sensors, and magnetic couplings.
- Consumer Products: Magnetic closures and eyewear toppers.
- Industrial: Machinery and high-performance motors.
- Creativity: Arts, crafts, and magnetic therapy.
